When disaster hits close to home, SERV is ready.

On March 26 a devastating E-F4 tornado swept through Newnan, Georgia. Newnan is about seventy miles away from our Canton office in Cherokee County. After the tornado’s 38.9 mile path, it left over 1,700 homes damaged including 70 homes completely destroyed and over 120 homes with major damage.

As church and volunteers began to gather, our SERV team was in the midst. Our Founder, Steve Kasha, and a few others headed to Newnan with 400 food boxes. When they arrived, the devastation they encountered was beyond what they had anticipated; tree trunks crushing vehicles, homes missing some if not all of their roof, and buildings that were no longer recognizable.

While there, Steve Kasha and Adili Kea interviewed a mother who lost her home and both of her vehicles. Because they don’t have any close family, she and her children have been sleeping in different areas with no power. We provided them with a food box so she is able to feed her children. Their story is just one of many.
The 400 food boxes were unloaded onto the “ground zero” where supplies were being gathered. Because various people came together, this building was filled with supplies ready to go to families affected by the tornado. And now, they also had food to give out. Every single SERV food box went to a family in need.

The Newnan tornado won’t be the last time disaster strikes Georgia. When the next emergency arises, SERV will be ready with a motivated team and a box truck full of food boxes.
